One thing has to be said before anything else: no one knows who André Luiz was in life. The name is a pseudonym chosen by the Spirit himself, and he never revealed his earthly identity — not even to the medium he worked with for twenty-five years.
A name chosen on the spot
When asked how he would sign, the Spirit noticed the presence of Chico Xavier's small half-brother, asleep nearby, and said he would sign as André Luiz. That is how, without ceremony, the signature was born that would go on thirteen books — the most widely read in Brazilian Spiritist literature.
In the narratives themselves he describes having been a public-health physician in early twentieth-century Rio de Janeiro: an educated man, of comfortable family, who died unprepared for what he found.
The riddle left open
Over the decades many have tried to work out who he was. Three names circulate often: Carlos Chagas, Oswaldo Cruz, and the neurologist Faustino Esposel. None has been confirmed, and none carries more weight than a well-meaning hypothesis.
It is worth noting that the reticence looks deliberate. A Spirit who spent thirteen books describing life on the other side in rich detail chose not to give his own name — and perhaps the reason is the simplest one: what he had to tell did not depend on who he had been.
Chico Xavier, the hand that wrote
Francisco Cândido Xavier was born in Pedro Leopoldo, Minas Gerais, on 2 April 1910, and died in Uberaba on 30 June 2002, aged 92. He wrote down more than four hundred and fifty books across six decades — the counts differ between sources, which is why we fix no number.
He gave the royalties of the entire body of work to charitable institutions and lived simply to the end. The last books in the André Luiz series were written down together with Waldo Vieira.
What the thirteen books brought
The series began in 1944 with Nosso Lar and ran for more than two decades. What it added was not doctrine — it was description. What arrival after death is like. How a spiritual colony works and the labour done there. What the regions of suffering are like, and how rescue reaches down into them. How mediumship operates from within. How the law of cause and effect unfolds in a concrete case, followed from both sides.
That is why these books hold a place of their own on this site: they answer what the Codification leaves open. But they hold it as what they are — the account of an experience, not established law. When an answer here rests on them, you will hear that said plainly.
